ChatGPT Ads and Microsoft Advertising in HubSpot: 3 checks before you spend

Written by Chen Yehoshua | Oct 7, 2026, 7:24:51 AM

HubSpot can now connect to ChatGPT Ads and Microsoft Advertising. A new channel in your ads dashboard doesn't tell sales which contacts deserve a follow-up, or why. Before you spend, settle three things: who controls the connection and the budget, what contact data the ad platform receives, and how a click becomes a contact your team can act on and report. Both integrations are still maturing, so verify each point in your own portal.

In text: check 1 is who controls the connection, check 2 is what contact data the ad platform receives, and check 3 is how a click is measured and followed up.

What can each integration do today?

Both integrations are young and their status differs by feature, so confirm what your portal offers before you plan around any row. Checked 6 October 2026.

Check 1: Who can connect, approve and spend?

Connecting an ad channel is an access decision before it is a marketing decision. Each integration has its own gates.

For ChatGPT Ads, a Super Admin can opt the HubSpot account into the beta, and connecting an ad account needs the Ads publishing permission in HubSpot (HubSpot's guide). You also need a ChatGPT Ads account. If your organization uses ChatGPT Business or Enterprise, OpenAI says a global admin must also approve HubSpot's Ads access in its Admin Console, where it is off by default, and that approval is separate from your own authorization. HubSpot's page describes the approver as a tenant admin, so confirm which role applies to your account.

For Microsoft Advertising, you need the same Ads publishing permission in HubSpot and the right administrator access on the Microsoft Advertising account itself. One HubSpot guide also notes a Super Admin opt-in for the integration beta (tracking guide).

In a small company these can all be one person. In a larger one they are often different people, so name two roles before anything is connected: the person who owns the budget, and the person who can turn the connection off. OpenAI notes that disconnecting HubSpot from ChatGPT Ads doesn't delete the account or its campaigns, but campaigns that depend on the connection may stop updating.

The Microsoft app costs $0. The ads are still paid media, budgeted separately from the integration.

What data does the ad platform receive?

With Microsoft Advertising, HubSpot can send conversion events built on lifecycle-stage changes, and the Marketplace listing says contact lists can sync as ad audiences. Both are deliberate transfers of contact data to a third party. HubSpot's own guide for conversion events asks you to confirm that each contact whose data you share has given permission, and the setup has you choose a consent property, which contact fields to send (email, phone, name) and whether to share all contacts or only those who interact with ads. Only lifecycle changes after you create the event count, and Microsoft's totals may not match HubSpot's.

  • Build a list for this purpose. Reusing "all contacts" sends people you never meant to advertise to.
  • Write the exclusions down. Decide whether current customers, open deals, partners and suppressed contacts belong in the audience.
  • Keep two permissions apart. Being subscribed to your email doesn't tell you whether someone expects to be targeted with ads, and an email unsubscribe doesn't remove a contact from a list you already synced.
  • Choose the consent property deliberately. If you can't point to the field that records permission to share data with an ad platform, don't sync.
  • Don't assume every contact matches. Matching happens on the ad platform's side, and HubSpot says more shared fields improve match rates.
  • Ask your privacy owner to approve the intended use. This article is not legal advice.

Conversion events go separately, with their own settings. Ad performance (clicks and spend) comes back. HubSpot links eligible ad interactions to CRM contacts.

What counts as a measurable result?

HubSpot can report ad performance, and it can attribute contacts to ads. They are different things, and five details decide which one you get.

  1. Tracking only counts clicks after you switch it on. Auto-tracking is a per-ad-account setting. HubSpot says tracking does not work retroactively: it can only associate future ad clicks with contacts.
  2. The ad type matters. HubSpot's Microsoft guide lists Audience campaigns as reporting-supported but not tracking-supported. Search, Shopping, Hotel, App and Performance Max campaigns have both. If your plan leans on Audience campaigns, expect spend and clicks in the report without contacts attributed to them.
  3. The click URL has to carry HubSpot's own parameters. To attribute a contact to a specific ad, the URL needs the network-specific parameters HubSpot adds. UTM parameters you add by hand can identify the traffic source, but HubSpot may not be able to attribute the contact to a specific ad. For Microsoft, HubSpot adds them through an account-level Final URL Suffix and Microsoft's click ID auto-tagging. Overriding that suffix, or using a URL shortener or third-party template that drops query parameters, can lose them.
  4. The page and the form have to be tracked. The HubSpot tracking code must be on the page the ad sends people to. For a new contact to be attributed, someone clicks an ad, starts a web session and then submits a form: a HubSpot form, a pop-up form, or a non-HubSpot form that uses HubSpot's Forms API (HubSpot's attribution guide). Some attribution reports also count other conversions, such as a Shopify signup, and the Re-engagement report covers existing contacts who click an ad later, so check which report you are reading.
  5. A deal has to meet its own rules. In the Ads tool's deal reporting, HubSpot attributes a deal only when it is Closed Won, associated with an attributed contact, carries a close date in the report range, and that contact is in the default Customer lifecycle stage. A custom lifecycle stage keeps the deal out of that report. Which attribution reports you can use also depends on your Marketing Hub tier: Starter gets the last-interaction report only.

Even then, a click is not yet a follow-up. The new contact needs a workflow with an owner and a response time. A contact in a report that nobody is assigned to is a line on a chart. And an attributed deal shows that an ad was part of the contact's journey. It doesn't prove the ad created the revenue.

The figure below shows one example path, a form-led conversion. Other paths exist, and the report you read decides which ones count.

In text: ad click, tagged landing page, form submitted and conversion recorded, contact created with a source, owner assigned and task due, deal associated and report rules checked. A visitor who is not identified gets no contact-level attribution, and only clicks after tracking was switched on can be attributed. Report models differ in which conversions count.

A readiness check before you scale spend

Take an illustrative journey: a prospect clicks an ad, lands on a tagged page and submits a form. Walk it end to end and look for evidence at each step.

  1. The final landing URL, after any redirects, still carries the tracking parameters, and the HubSpot tracking code is on that page.
  2. The contact record shows the original source and the campaign.
  3. A workflow enrolled the contact and set an owner.
  4. Someone received a task or notification inside the response time you promised.
  5. If a deal was created, it is associated with the contact, so the report can pick it up when the deal closes.

Run this with your smallest approved budget before you scale it. If a step has no evidence, fix it before you add spend.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT Ads in HubSpot generally available?

HubSpot's documentation labels it Beta and says a Super Admin can opt the account in. Availability and features can change, so check your portal before you plan a launch.

Does the Microsoft Advertising integration cost anything?

The Marketplace app is listed at $0, and the listing says syncing audiences and events needs Marketing Hub Starter, Professional or Enterprise. The ad spend itself is separate.

Can I create Microsoft ads inside HubSpot?

HubSpot's guides we checked cover connecting the account, tracking, conversion events and reporting. We found no guide to building Microsoft campaigns in HubSpot, so assume you still create them in Microsoft Advertising until your portal shows otherwise.

Will every ad click become a contact in HubSpot?

No. Reporting and attribution are different, Audience campaigns on Microsoft are reporting-only, and clicks before auto-tracking was switched on aren't attributed. For a new contact, HubSpot's baseline rule is a click, a web session and a submitted form. A visitor who is never identified isn't attributed to a contact, though some reports also count other conversions, such as a Shopify signup.

Who needs to approve the ChatGPT Ads connection?

In HubSpot you need the Ads publishing permission, and a Super Admin can opt the account into the beta. OpenAI says a global admin must approve HubSpot's Ads access for ChatGPT Business and Enterprise organizations, and HubSpot's page describes a tenant admin, so confirm which role applies to you. These roles can belong to the same person.

Should I sync my whole contact list as an ad audience?

Start with a list built for the purpose, with written exclusions and a consent property you can point to, and have your privacy owner approve the use. An email subscription and ad targeting are separate permissions.

Can an Israeli company advertise on ChatGPT Ads?

OpenAI lists Israel among the countries with self-service access, provided the legal entity that advertises and is billed is based in a listed country. The pages we checked don't say whether Hebrew ad creative is supported, so confirm that with OpenAI before you plan Hebrew ads.
