A lot of founders we meet at IV-Lead made up their minds about HubSpot years ago. It looked expensive once you grew, hard to learn, and built for companies with a marketing department. So they run the business on a spreadsheet, an inbox, a couple of AI chats and their own memory. That setup works until the second salesperson joins, or until the first busy month when follow-ups start slipping.
HubSpot Starter has changed a lot since most of those opinions were formed. HubSpot now pitches it at the person doing every job at once, with tools to build demand, win deals and take over the admin, all in one connected CRM.
Below is our read on what's in it today, what "a CRM that updates itself" means in practice, and how to tell whether it's the right move for your team yet.
Because each tool holds only one piece of the customer. The spreadsheet has the deal value, Gmail has the last email, your calendar has the meeting, and the reason the customer went quiet is in your head. An AI chat can help you write the follow-up, but only after you paste in everything it needs to know.
That works while you're the only person selling. It stops working when someone else has to pick up a customer, because there's no single record to hand over. It also costs you time every week: the call you didn't log, the follow-up you meant to send on Tuesday, and the pipeline number you rebuild by hand before every investor update.
HubSpot Starter bundles the Starter edition of each hub on top of the Smart CRM. HubSpot groups it around three jobs, and that's a useful way to read it.
| Job | What's in Starter | What it takes off your plate |
|---|---|---|
| Build demand | Breeze Assistant, website and landing page builder, AI content and image generation, email automation, ad tracking | Writing every page and email from scratch, and guessing which ads bring customers |
| Win deals | Prospecting Agent, AI meeting prep and notetaker, deal pipeline automation, HubSpot Payments | Researching accounts before calls, writing up meetings, and moving deals by hand |
| Automate the admin | Smart CRM with email sync and data import, contact and company automation, Agent Builder, HubSpot Work (beta) | Logging emails and calls, re-entering data from other tools, and chasing tasks across tools |
One thing to check on your quote: HubSpot has started selling new customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa on a seats-and-credits model, where Starter is one edition priced per GTM seat. What each edition includes can differ from the list above, so confirm the features you need are on your quote. Our guide to seats-and-credits pricing explains the model.
HubSpot also offers connectors that bring your CRM data into the AI assistants you may already use, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot. The HubSpot connector for Claude, for example, is free on every tier. It can read your contacts, deals and history, and it can write back: update a deal stage, log call notes or create a follow-up task from inside the chat.
Our take: the connectors are an early win for founders who already live in an AI chat. You keep working where you work, and the CRM stops being a separate place you have to remember to update. Some AI features and agents run on HubSpot credits, so check how many your plan includes before switching everything on.
Partly, and the part it doesn't do is a sensible design choice. Email sync logs your conversations against the right contact, and the Smart CRM keeps records updated across your connected tools. HubSpot's notetaker joins Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Zoom calls from your connected calendar, records and transcribes them, and ties each one to the right contact, company and deal.
After the call it writes a summary, drafts the follow-up email and suggests next steps you can turn into tasks. It also suggests changes to the deal record. By default most of these wait for you to approve, edit or dismiss them (admins can choose which fields update automatically), so a misheard sentence doesn't quietly change your forecast.
Two details matter for Israeli teams. HubSpot says Google Meet transcripts currently support English only, so test it on a Hebrew call before you rely on it. And recording rules vary by country, so make sure people on the call know it's being recorded. The notetaker comes with Sales Hub and Service Hub Starter and above, and needs an assigned seat: a Core seat on Starter, a Sales or Service seat on Professional and Enterprise.
Our take: "updates itself" means fewer keystrokes, not zero judgment. Approving a suggested update takes seconds. Typing it yourself took minutes, which is why it usually didn't happen.
Some buyers now ask ChatGPT or Gemini for a recommendation before they ever reach Google or your site. HubSpot AEO, currently in beta, tracks how often your brand appears in answers from ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. It suggests which prompts to track, shows which pages and sites the AI is citing, and recommends what content to create or fix.
HubSpot also sells it on its own, and a deeper version that uses your CRM data comes with Marketing Hub Professional and Enterprise. For a one-off check, HubSpot's free AI Search Grader gives a snapshot of where you stand.
We track IV-Lead's own AI visibility with HubSpot AEO. If you try it, spend time on the prompt list before reading the score, because the score only measures the questions you chose to track.
Starter tends to pay off once the business depends on follow-up. Good signs:
It can wait if you sell to a handful of accounts you know personally and nothing slips. And if you already know you need heavier customisation or advanced reporting from day one, compare Starter against the higher tiers before buying. Moving up later is straightforward; a badly scoped start costs more to fix.
Keep the first two weeks small. HubSpot's guided setup gets the basics running quickly; the steps below are what we'd add so the CRM is useful from the first month.
Yes. HubSpot's free tools are a no-commitment way to try the CRM. Starter adds automation, agents, the notetaker, meeting prep, higher limits and removes HubSpot branding.
Yes. HubSpot offers connectors for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, so your CRM data is available inside the assistant you already use. The Claude connector can also write updates back to HubSpot.
HubSpot lists Hebrew among its supported call and meeting transcription languages, but Google Meet transcripts currently support English only. On Zoom or Teams, test it on one of your own Hebrew calls before you depend on it.
Not necessarily. Starter comes with guided setup and doesn't require paid onboarding. A partner is worth it when you're migrating messy data, connecting an ERP or ecommerce system, or want the CRM shaped around how you actually sell.
In a 30-minute call, we'll look at how you sell today and tell you straight whether Starter fits, what to set up first, or whether you don't need it yet. No deck and no sales pitch.
