HubSpot Original Source vs Latest Source: how to read them for attribution

Understand HubSpot's Original Source and Latest Source properties: what each one measures, how they differ, and how to use both for honest B2B attribution.

Two of HubSpot's most useful attribution fields are also two of the most misread. Original Source tells you how a contact first found you; Latest Source tells you what most recently brought them back — and using the wrong one is how marketing teams credit the wrong channel. Knowing the difference, and when to lean on each, is the foundation of attribution you can actually trust. Here's the practitioner's read on what these properties mean and how to use them well.

What's the difference between Original Source and Latest Source?

Original Source is the first touch — how a contact entered your database; Latest Source is the most recent touch that brought them back to your site. When a person first becomes a contact, HubSpot stamps their Original Source and never changes it: it's a permanent record of the channel that first introduced them — organic search, paid, social, a referral, direct, and so on. Latest Source, by contrast, updates over time to reflect the channel of their most recent meaningful interaction. So one is a fixed birth certificate; the other is a running log of what keeps pulling them in. Reading one as if it were the other is the single most common attribution mistake.

When should you use Original Source?

Use Original Source to understand which channels create new contacts and fill the top of your funnel. Because it never changes, Original Source is the honest answer to "where do our leads come from in the first place?" If you want to know which channel is best at introducing new people to your business, group your contacts by Original Source. Worked example: you discover that organic search is your single biggest Original Source for new contacts — that tells you content and SEO are doing the heavy lifting on awareness, and it justifies investing there. What Original Source can't tell you is what closed the deal months later — for that, you need the other field.

When should you use Latest Source?

Use Latest Source to understand what re-engages contacts and brings them back when they're closer to buying. Because it updates, Latest Source reflects the channel that most recently mattered. It's useful for understanding the bottom of the funnel — what pulls a known contact back to your site right before they convert or talk to sales. Worked example: a contact whose Original Source is organic search but whose Latest Source is email tells a real story — content found them, and a nurture email brought them back when they were ready. Both channels earned credit; the two fields together show the journey that one field alone would hide.

How do you use both for honest attribution?

Read them as two ends of the same journey — first touch and most recent touch — and never let one channel claim all the credit. B2B buying involves many touches over weeks or months, and no single property captures that fully. The practical move is to look at Original Source to see what fills the funnel and Latest Source to see what closes it, then resist the urge to declare one channel the "winner." The channel that introduced a buyer and the channel that brought them back at the decision point are both doing real work. Worked example: a team that judges marketing only by Latest Source quietly starves its content and SEO, because those show up as Original Source — and then wonders why the top of the funnel dries up. Using both fields prevents that blind spot. Building attribution you can trust on top of clean source data is exactly what we do in RevOps.

The IV-Lead take

Original Source and Latest Source aren't competing metrics — they're two ends of the same story. One tells you how people first found you; the other tells you what brought them back. The teams that get attribution wrong pick one field, crown a winning channel, and starve the rest. The teams that get it right read both, accept that B2B journeys are multi-touch, and give credit across the path. Start there, keep your source data clean, and you'll make budget decisions based on how buyers actually behave — not on whichever field you happened to look at.

Frequently asked questions

What is HubSpot's Original Source property?
It records how a contact first entered your database — the channel of their very first interaction. HubSpot sets it once and never changes it, so it's a permanent answer to where each contact originally came from.

What is Latest Source, and how is it different?
Latest Source records the channel of a contact's most recent meaningful interaction, and it updates over time. So Original Source is the fixed first touch, while Latest Source is the running, most-recent touch — they answer different questions.

Which source property should I use for attribution?
Both. Use Original Source to see which channels create new contacts and fill the funnel, and Latest Source to see what re-engages people near the decision. Relying on only one credits the wrong channels and hides half the journey.

Why does my best Original Source channel show few conversions?
Because the channel that first introduces someone often isn't the one that brings them back to convert. Content and search frequently dominate Original Source while email or direct dominate Latest Source. Reading both together shows the full path instead of penalizing top-of-funnel channels.
